Let’s be honest, recruitment can be a pain in the neck. It’s time consuming, fraught with the danger of appointing the wrong person and there’s lots of damage that can be done to your brand if it’s not done well.
In this article, we share our top six tips for making the recruitment process as painless/efficient/positive as possible:
- Lock in dates for interviews (first and second) and put those dates in your advertisements so people who apply can ensure they are free on those dates
- Don’t leave too much time between the first and second interviews (we recommend no more than three days). The best candidates are always in demand and if potential employers snooze they lose
- Give proper thought to the interview experience the candidate will have – ensure you pick impressive people on the interview panel, have good questions to ask and be prepared to answer questions candidates may have. (Top tip – people particularly want to know about flexibility in the current market)
- Take references and make offers of employment quickly – we’d recommend taking at least one reference concurrently on candidates you consider the strongest during the interview process so they are to hand as soon as possible
- Have a Plan B. Interestingly, we are finding a higher than usual number of people are fielding multiple offers or turning down job offers
- Handle the candidates you want to reject with professional courtesy – you would be amazed at how many candidates we approach about vacancies who won’t interview with an organisation because they, or someone they know, had a bad interview experience in the past
We hope these tips help to relieve some of the stress and uncertainty during the recruitment process. They should certainly help you speed up the process.
