As a recruitment company, we have noticed an interesting trend over the last few months in the markets in which we work.
Organisations have started to hire again and we are finding that candidates are more reluctant to move than they have been in the past. This is evidenced by a reduction in the number of applications received from experienced people in our sectors through advertisements we’ve placed and also in conversations we’ve had with potential candidates when we have proactively approached them about vacancies we are working on.
This trend is particularly prevalent in operational staff who work at the grass roots levels, eg employment consultants, job coaches, etc.
The reasons for people’s reluctance to move are generally twofold:
1. they feel more secure in their current employment rather than moving to a new employer they don’t know and
2. they feel their current employer has treated them well during this difficult period and their loyalty to their current employer has increased as a result of this.
Whilst it makes the job of attracting new talent to organisations more difficult, it’s lovely to see that good old fashioned trait of loyalty becoming more prevalent. It’s also a reminder to organisations that they need to work hard at their reputations in order to attract and retain good people.
